3 Ways to Create an Internet-Friendly Resume

The reality of today’s job search marketplace is that most resumes will not only be received electronically, but will in most cases undergo a preliminary review by a computerized Applicant Tracking System such as Taleo and Kenexa. Here are 3 simple ways to ensure your resume works both online and off.

1) CHOOSE AN INDUSTRY-STANDARD DOCUMENT FORMAT AND FONT

The more well-known your document format is, the less chances of it being garbled in transmission.  When submitting your resume as an email attachment, be sure to use either PDF (.pdf) or MS Word (.doc). Due to numerous incompatibility issues found in the more recent MS Word file format (.docx), it is strongly recommended to use the older, more stable .doc format.

When submitting your resume via an online submission form, create what’s known as an ASCII (Plain Text) document, which is basically a version of your resume stripped of all extraneous formatting and line breaks. Instructions on how to create an ASCII resume are widely available on the Internet.

Commonly accepted fonts for resumes include Arial, Garamond, and the perennial Times New Roman. Avoid lowering the font size past 10 pt. to ensure readability.

2) ELIMINATE FLASHY LOGOS AND SIDEBARS

There are 2 reasons why your resume needs to be as visually clean as possible: flashy formatting draws attention away from the CONTENT, and the more visually complex your document is, the greater the chances it will cause a compatibility issue when viewed by a potential employer. Keep it simple.

3) INCLUDE A CORE COMPETENCIES SECTION

A Core Competencies section is basically a list of in-demand keywords, typically inserted between the opening and work history sections of your resume. This is crucial when submitting online, as Applicant Tracking Systems are designed to look for specific keywords on a candidate’s resume. Keywords can be found by searching job postings you’re interested in submitting to. Be sure to only include those you actually possess, and back it up through referencing them in your work history.
