Q&A: resume – how to deal with large gap of time due to disability?
Question by art_flood: resume – how to deal with large gap of time due to disability?
I have been on disability, I have not worked for 5 years. So, I have a huge gaping hole in my resume. DVR suggested that I use a summary type resume, and I have prepared one, but employers are wanting a detailed resume, and I don’t really want to tell them that I have not been working if I can. If I do, I’m automatically disqualified because every single employer I’ve shared this with said they need RECENT EXPERIENCE. So I don’t know what to do.
thanks

when they ask about it just explain your condition confidently and make sure they know that youll be the right person for the job anyway, its not about the resume, its about the interview! most of the time..

tell them due to the time off you’ll probably be able to hire you at a cheaper rate then had you more man-hours in. especially if your in the proffessional fields
Tell them you worked helping overcome disabilities as you understood your inner self and made a contribution to society, at this stage you don’t need to tell them it was your disability unless you want to.
Just be honest and explain your gap in employment is due to your disability. They say they need recent experience, but hey…they all say that! “Must have 5-7 years experience…” it’s all a bunch of crap. Be honest and apply anyway.
Be very honest with your resume… you shouldn’t hide the truth especially with the 5-yerar-gap on your working status. If you can prove to your would be employer that you can do something worthwhile to the company… THAT would be the real reason to HIRE you!
