Hi! I was wondering if anyone in the gymnastic community could recommend things I should emphasis in my cover letter and resume. I would LOVE to be a gymnastic coach however previously I have only had serving and direct sales experience. I did babysit for years though and have a diploma in acting. I’m not sure if there is a way I could incorporate that into my letter.

Do you have a gymnastics background? Depending on what level you want to teach, some background in gymnastics might be essential. That’s probably the most important thing to emphasize – they want to know that you know what you’re doing, that you can see the errors and make corrections, and that you understand the safety aspect of the sport. You’ll have to go through spotting training if you’re new at that and planning on coaching at an intermediate level or higher.

If you want to work with pre-schoolers and very beginners, then experience in gymnastics won’t be as necessary. But still if you have any experience in cheer or dance you might want to mention that. Mainly they’ll be looking for prior experience with kids. That’ll be #1, so absolutely mention how many years you babysat for and any other experience you may have had teaching kids (for example, in my cover letter for my first coaching job I mentioned that I had volunteered with a program that instructed kids in horseback riding). Also make sure they know that you’re enthusiastic, confident, and just love being with kids.

So basically what I’m getting at here is…
For intermediate/advanced gymnastics, prior gymnastics experience is absolutely needed.
For early beginner gymnastics, no experience may be necessary in the sport but experience with kids and a good attitude will be.
