Q&A: Do companies normally share resumes with each other?

Question by Joe: Do companies normally share resumes with each other?
Let’s say you send in your resume to apply at a corporation for a job. Once they have your resume, how likely is it that people at that company may share it, email it etc. to people at other companies? For example say 1 person in HR has friends at other companies in HR and they want to help them out by sharing the resume. Does this happen? Because you don’t want copies of your first resume all over the place if you planned on customizing your resume for each specific job.

I head IT for a dev company and have a few friends in similar roles. We will discuss mutual hiring. However, if they have a good candidate for a position I have, our rule is that we will contact the applicant and ask for permission before transferring the resume between companies.

In your case, if that happened, it would be your opportunity to allow it, but say you’ll send an updated resume.
