How to Find a Job In a Different City

What do you do when you’re looking for work in a place where you do not currently live? This happens to many of us, whether we’re leaving college, leaving the military or just want to move to a new location. And yet, you know many employers do not have any interest in paying for people to move so rather than even consider someone who doesn’t appear to be local, they say no to everyone who doesn’t. So how do you get around that? Well, first, you want to make yourself look local. So on your resume you have your name, you have our email address and you have a cell phone number but you don’t have other addresses that make it too obvious right from the top. Then consider getting one of the Pay-per-Use type telephones with a telephone number that is in the area you want to work. That makes you look local because your cell phone number that they’re seeing is a local number. None of these things preclude you from, obviously, saying where you are currently but they make it easier for people to get past the screen outs and look at what you can do for them and that is your real goal in these types of things. Then you want to make local connections. Clearly, if this is your hometown you want to go back to those connections you already have; the people you went to high school with or college or who knew you well in the past.
