Does having a pilot license look good for college resumes? How to get?
Question by dukeallen: Does having a pilot license look good for college resumes? How to get?
As a pure hobby I’d like to eventually fly a little bit later on. Right now, as a high schooler, I was considering getting my student pilot license. Which, I’ve heard isn’t that hard to get?
- How can I get one? I’d like to start my hobby early on to perfect it later on
- Since college will be coming up in a short time, will it look good on my resume (I’m not doing it just for this, but i’m just curious)

There is no such thing as a student pilot license. You become a student, then after you are trained, you become a pilot.
How much does it cost to learn to fly?
The cost depends upon how many hours it takes you to get your license, dependent on the factors listed above. The following estimate assumes 60 hours total, 40 of which are dual and 20 solo, in a Piper Tomahawk:
40 hours dual at $ 145/hour* $ 5,800
20 hours solo at $ 95/hour* $ 1,900
10 hours ground instruction at $ 50/hour $ 500
Books, Charts & Supplies $ 200
Medical examination $ 95
Written knowledge exam $ 90
Flight test $ 350
Total $ 8,935

well who ever told you that it is not very hard, well they lied to you. Just as an example one of the book you will have to buy is called the FAR/AIM. It is all the laws rules and regulations from the faa. For as long as you plan to fly, this will be your bible, and it is not nearly as easy to understand as the bible. The current one is about 2 inches thick, and is written in solid pages of 10 point font. Here is just one definition from the start of the book(Before you even get into all the laws)
Maximum speed for stablity characteristics, Vfc/Mfc means a speed that may not be less than a speed mid way between maximum operating limit speed(Vmo/Mmo) and demonstrated flight diving speed (Vdf/Mdf) except that, for altitudes where the mach number is the limiting factor Mfc need not exceed the mach number at witch effective speed warning accrues.
Now that is not something you would need to learn for you license, it just happens to be the part i left of on while studying. but it dose give you an idea of how the book is written.
Long story shot, it’s not easy and as the person above me stated, it’s not cheap.
And yes it looks good on just about any thing because it is hard. you get through it, people know that you stick to what you put your mind to.
As for how to get one, Just look for a flight school in your city, almost every city has one, try searching one line or in the phone book. if that fails to turn up anything, just ust got you your local airport and start driving around it, out side the fencing. eventually you will find a building that will have a sign saying something like “Flight training here”
