Many job searchers are not aware that the formatting on a resume is almost as important as the resume’s content.  To paraphrase, if you do not have a fair setup, many hiring bosses won’t give your resume a second look.

Make sure Your Contact information is at the very top

This could seem like a no-brainer to some, but it is vital that you place your contact information at the very top of your resume.  But not just on the first page – on each page.  The actual reason is perhaps because your resume will most likely be mixed together with other resumes, so by having your contact information as a header, there’ll be little question that the hiring manager is looking at yours.  

Keep Your Paragraphs transient

One major turnoff for hiring executives is to see intensely dense paragraphs on a resume.  If you have paragraphs that are longer than 4 to 5 lines, there’s a fair chance that you won’t hear anything back from the company.  Looking through resumes is already a boring job for hiring executives.  It definitely doesn’t have to be difficult with long reasons.  

Do not use Too Many Bullets

While using bullets is well-liked on resumes as it helps to highlight certain facets of your career, there is a such thing as using too many.  Remember that not every section wishes bullet points, and the ones that do only need about 4-6 per section.  If your resume uses too few bullets, it’ll appear disorganised ( since there isn’t any reason to use bullets at all if you’re only putting two points down ), and if you use too many, you’ll lessen their efficacy ; take a respectable approach.  

Watch Your Font Size

Sometimes it may seem fun to try different font styles and sizes to make your resume standout, but there can simply be a fine line between it being unique and cartoonish.  The better route to go when using fonts is to stick to 10-point font for most styles ( usually Arial or Tahoma ) and 11-point for Times New Roman.  

Keep the Proper Margins

Margins are critical when formatting your resume because they ensure that it does not look too crowded or look like the words will spill off the page.  The recommended margin width is mostly between one half and one in..  This is as it’s great to maintain plenty of white space, something adding margin space can do.  

Use Bold, Underlining and Italics Habitually

Using word-formatting options such as bold, servant and italics could be a great way to make sure details of your resume “pop” or stand out .  However , there is a such thing as using these formatting tools to frequently or not enough.  A good rule of thumb to follow is by utilising them only under certain conditions ( i.e.  Bolding a job title or italicizing companies you have worked for ).  This helps the person taking a look at the resume figure out where certain bits of information are located, and serves as a sort of easy categorization tool.
