Battle of the Saxes – ECC 2010 – 3
Battle of the Saxes jazz concert at Essex County College. Sponsored by the Africana Institute and Student Life and Activities Office. On the women’s side, saxophonists Tia Fuller, Camille Thurman and Chelsea Baratz will perform. The male musicians include Don Braden, Bruce Williams and Casey Benjamin. All are established musicians with impressive resumes. Tia Fuller has performed throughout the world as the saxophonist for Beyonce’s band and has appeared on such programs as the Oprah Winfrey Show, Today Show and Good Morning America. She has recorded three CDs to date. Baratz performed on Aretha Franklin’s “Jewels in the Crown” album. Thurman, who performs with her Camille Thurman Quartet, is working on her first solo jazz album due out later this year. The multi-talented Braden has 14 CDs out and has worked as the co-music supervisor for the hit show “Cosby.” He has served as the music director for NJPAC’s Wachovia Jazz for Teens program. Williams mentors young jazz musicians, including participants at the NJPAC program. He is a long time performer and teacher. He himself has been mentored by such legends as Branford Marsalis and Joe Ford. In addition to his saxophone talent, Benjamin is a skilled keyboardist, producer and song writer.
